中世紀時期，根特由於河岸肥沃土壤滋養出的水草很適合做為蓄養羊隻的飼料，而羊隻產出的羊毛也衍伸出蓬勃的紡織工業，甚至興盛到必須從英格蘭與蘇格蘭進口羊毛來滿足產能，讓根特成為此領域的佼佼者達數世紀之久。
In medieval times, Ghent flourished due to the fertile soil along its rivers, which produced lush grass perfect for feeding sheep. The wool from these sheep led to a thriving textile industry. Ghent’s textile prowess grew to the point where it had to import wool from England and Scotland to meet its production needs, making it a leader in this field for centuries.
